“It is hereby clarified that reference to the Mehta family in the HDFC press statement does not include my client, Mr. Chetan Mehta. My client is in no way related to the recalcitrant defaulters i.e. Splendour Gems Limited (formerly known as Beautiful Diamonds Limited). These are entities owned by Mr. Kishore Mehta and his sons Mr. Rajesh Mehta, Mr. Rajiv Mehta, and Mr. Prashant Mehta,” the statement from Chetan Mehta’s lawyer said.
On June 7 the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust made allegations against HDFC Bank’s managing director and chief executive officer Sashidhar Jagdishan claiming he had acted on the behest of former trustees.
HDFC Bank clarified on 8 June to stock exchanges that the allegations by the trust’s Mehta family were an abuse of the legal process and that they have been thwarting the recovery of long standing loans they had obtained from the bank which remain unpaid. It named Splendour Gems as a recalcitrant defaulter.
Chetan Mehta is a descendant of Kirtilal Manilal Mehta and became a trustee of the hospital in 2007. He is fighting in court claiming his legitimacy as a trustee of the hospital.
