Kerala rains: IMD issues orange and yellow alerts as monsoon set to intensify again

    Synopsis

Kerala is bracing for another spell of intense monsoon showers, particularly affecting the northern districts. The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts across several districts, forecasting very heavy rainfall and strong winds. Authorities are urging preparedness as the monsoon enters an active phase, with potential risks to coastal communities and flood-prone areas.

Heavy rains in parts of Kerala; IMD issues orange alert in 3 districts
After a brief lull, Kerala is once again bracing for a fresh wave of intense monsoon showers, particularly in the northern districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of orange and yellow alerts across multiple districts over the coming days, warning residents and authorities to prepare for renewed heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The monsoon, which made an early onset over Kerala on May 24, had initially brought widespread destruction—flooding roads, uprooting trees, and damaging public infrastructure.

After May 31, the rains had tapered off, but the weather department now expects the showers to pick up strength once again from midweek onwards.

Orange alert in 9 districts for Saturday

On Tuesday, the IMD issued an orange alert—which indicates the likelihood of very heavy rainfall between 11 and 20 cm—for two districts on Thursday, four on Friday, and as many as nine districts on Saturday.

These alerts suggest that parts of Kerala, especially the north, could see a significant increase in rainfall over the weekend.

In addition, yellow alerts have been sounded across nine districts for both Tuesday and Wednesday, eight districts on Thursday, seven on Friday, and five on Saturday.

A yellow alert corresponds to heavy rainfall in the range of 6 to 11 cm, and is an indication for local agencies to remain watchful.

Wind speeds to intensify by weekend

The IMD has also warned of strong surface winds, with speeds expected to reach 30 to 40 kmph on Tuesday and Wednesday in some parts of the state.

These winds are forecast to strengthen further by Saturday, potentially touching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, posing risks to fishermen, coastal communities, and areas vulnerable to falling trees or electric poles.

Officials have urged district administrations to remain on alert and take preemptive measures to mitigate any potential damage. The early phase of the monsoon had already caused considerable distress, and with forecasts indicating a second wave of intensified rainfall, flood-prone areas are being monitored closely.

The IMD’s forecasts suggest that Kerala is now entering a more active phase of the monsoon, and residents are advised to follow weather bulletins and exercise caution, particularly in hilly and low-lying regions.
