Social Security checks could shrink for 450,000 Americans in June. Check when will your payment arrive

    Synopsis

Many Americans may see smaller Social Security payments due to student loan defaults. The government can deduct up to 15%. For June 2025, Supplemental Security Income payments were issued early on May 30. Regular Social Security payments will be disbursed based on birth dates. Those who started receiving benefits before May 1997 will get paid on June 3.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) advises waiting at least three business days before taking action.

Social Security payments for almost half a million Americans might come in small amounts this month if they are behind on federal student loan repayments, reported NewsWeek. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau found that some 450,000 Americans aged 62 and older were in default on their student loan payments and many of them were likely to collect Social Security checks.

In recent years, individuals behind on payments were shielded from collections due to protections put in place during the coronavirus pandemic. However, in April, the Trump administration announced that aggressive debt collection efforts would restart in early May.

As of May 5, the White House reinstated offsets for borrowers in default, including automatic deductions from Social Security payments. Through the Treasury Offset Program, the federal government is authorized to withhold up to 15% of a person’s Social Security benefits to collect on defaulted federal student loans.

For someone receiving the average monthly Social Security benefit of $1,976, a 15% garnishment would reduce their payment by $296.40 each month.

Millions of Americans depend on Social Security for a significant portion—or even all—of their income in retirement. As a result, garnishments can have a serious impact on their financial well-being. However, there are options available to help borrowers regain good standing on their federal student loans.

"A borrower who has failed to pay on their federal student loan is considered in default when the loan delinquency reaches 270 days past due," Tom O'Hare, a holistic college adviser at Get College Going, told Newsweek.

"The loan is generally reassigned from loan servicers to a collection agency that works on behalf of the federal government to either litigate or implement stringent collection recovery practices, including wage garnishment and deduction from Social Security payments," he continued.

    Social Security June 2025 schedule

While thousands of social security beneficiaries wonder if they will get the Supplemental Security Income (SSI), in June 2025, the SSA has issued a key update. There won’t be a regular SSI payment this month. That’s because the Social Security Administration sent out the June payment early, on May 30, 2025.

So, if you receive SSI, you might have gotten two payments in May—one at the beginning of the month (for May) and one at the end (for June). This happens sometimes when the first of the month falls on a weekend. Instead of sending the money late, they send it a little early.

Since June 1, 2025, falls on a Sunday, SSI payments were issued early on Friday, May 30, 2025. As a result, there will be no SSI payment in June. The next SSI payment is scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

If your Social Security or SSI payment hasn't arrived on time, try not to worry. The Social Security Administration (SSA) advises waiting at least three business days before taking action. If it still hasn't arrived after that, you can contact your local SSA office or call their national hotline.

To help prevent future delays, consider enrolling in direct deposit. It’s quicker, more reliable, and ensures you receive your payment even if there are disruptions with the mail.
